In an effort to actually keep up with my Dreamwidth I am updating about the one thing that doesn't make me upset right now: needlework!

I'm sincerely glad I learned how to knit before I learned crochet, because crochet is WAY easier to do and I would probably never have gone on to learn to knit if I hadn't done it first. Which is also why I'm so super excited to see so many people on my plurk list knitting and getting interested in knitting. It makes my heart happy! Next, I will get everyone hooking. At the moment I do a lot of both, and have projects in both styles going right now.

2012 marks 9 years of me knitting, although there are some sizable gaps in between and for a long time I didn't really challenge myself to do much. But in the couple of years I've been really pushing myself to learn new things and I've gone from very basic knit and purl to working in rounds, various sorts of cast on techniques, knots and baubles, keyholes and loops and most importantly FINALLY mastering crochet.

I have probably bitched about this a lot, but it took me over a year of trying off and on to learn crochet. Mostly because I learn best by watching someone else do it and no one around me knows how. For some reason I have a hard time watching youtube videos for it, they never seemed to answer my questions. Eventually I just... figured it out, as insane as it sounds. I messed with it enough that when I started doing it right I knew, and from there I could follow written instructions much more easily. It was honestly a matter of about an hour between me going "this is crap, I can't understand what they mean" and "oh holy crap I'm doing it".

It's likely that I'll never really take crochet as seriously for garments and useful items, for some reason it just doesn't seem as legit when I think of making a crochet hat or scarf. Probably because I am much more confident doing both those things with knitting needles. Crochet is definitely better for animals and figures though, holy crap. I've done amigurumi in knitting and crochet and by far crochet is easier. Knitting small details and specific curves is balls compared to crocheting the same. Which is probably why most of the things I'm trying to plan out are in crochet terms.

Fair warning: I will probably discuss and vent on pattern development here quite a bit. I'm still fairly new at it and getting more practice and I will probably fail more than I will succeed until I have a few patterns under my belt. But I'm determined and I have some awesome ideas I would love to see make it into production eventually (cough-Rayquaza)

Currently in the works:
Wooper - crochet - gift
Slant knot scarf - knit - gift
Hurricane hat - knit - gift
Spiral legwarmers - knit - unsure
Tiny Assassins - crochet - personal/pattern development

If anyone has suggestions or patterns to share I'm always open. At the moment I'm working too many things as gifts and requests to want to take on more, but eventually I would like to take requests again.
